Cutting Fabric with the Making Memories Slice
February 14, 2010 | Filed Under Scrapbooking
I must admit I was so afraid to try this…scared that it might hurt the machine. I even thought it did not work because it cuts so clean you can not ‘see’ the cut lines after the Slice has finished. But I have tried a few times now and I am very happy with the results. On the WhySlice site they have a list of paper types the Slice can cut. It is very strongly recommended that you use a fusible web backing adhered on your fabric before attempting this.
You will need at least a 4×4 inch of thin fabric, fusible web backing or I used Heat-n-Bond Iron On Adhesive. Whatever you want to decorate (t-shirts, onesies, towels, pillowcases etc.) and a die-cutting system that is known to cut through fabric.
(NB You can use punches too with the Iron on Adhesive…I did a few with my Martha Stewart Butterfly Punch and it works like a bomb!)
STEP 1
Iron your t-shirt to remove wrinkles. Following the manufacturers instructions iron on the adhesive backing.
STEP 2
Place the Fabric Paper side down on your Slice Cutting Mat. Make sure it is securely attached to the cutting board and that it will not move around.
STEP 3
Select the desired size, and Cut holding firmly so the machine will not move around.
STEP 4
When the Slice has finished cutting you might think oh dear it did not cut! lol! But if you peel the Fabric off the cutting board being very careful to not separate the backing from your fabric you will see it did an excellent job. I had two coordinating pieces of 4×4 inch Fabric and I cut the same design twice.
STEP 5
Decide where you wish to place your designs before peeling off the backing and ironing the fabric to the t-shirt.
Iron them on in steps.
And what about wearing your heart on your sleeve?
Let it cool and if you are savvy with the sewing machine you can add some more detail. I just loved these and I think the possibilities are endless!
I had a very excited Chrismari who did not want to pose! lol! But as you can see it is such a cute project and just perfect for Valentines Day!
